The man, the myth, the legend, Prince, is dead at the age of 57. His publicist confirmed the news to the Associated Press this afternoon.

Authorities were called to his Paisley Park estate in the town of Chanhassen, Minnesota this morning for a medical emergency. His untimely death comes just a week after his tour plane made an emergency landing in Illinois where he was hospitalized for what was described as the flu. He had canceled a few shows in Atlanta prior to the emergency landing, though was reportedly in good spirits after and threw a dance party at his house.

Cause of death is still unknown.

One of the more inventive musicians of our time, The Purple One was fiercely independent and remained true to craft no matter the cost. He often battle with the music business establishment, putting out records that he saw fit, playing lengthy shows with sets that would often exceed three hours with after parties that ran well into the night. His fearless fashion sense that was only matched by enigmatic personality, Prince leaves behind a storied discography that most musicians can only dream of trying to create.

As one might expect, the world is reacting to Prince's death.
