Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee had the New York crowd jumping and swaying when they took to the stage at the Grammy Awards ceremony to perform their hit single "Despacito."
The Latin duo kept it casual while they sang the original version of the song flanked by scantily clad women gyrating and twerking in time with the beat. The temptation to sway and bop heads was too good to pass and some of the audience gave in and enjoyed themselves.
A few artists were even caught on video swaying to the music. R&B star John Legend and his pregnant wife Chrissy Teigen could not help but sway to the beat while on their seats. Some clapped their hands and others waved their arms in the air. The crowd also sang along in the chorus.
The cheers from the crowd grew louder when 2006 Miss Universe winner Zuleyka Rivera joined Yankee and Fonsi on stage. Dressed in a sexy gold and nude bodysuit, Rivera runway-walked/danced her way onto the stage surrounded with the other shimmying dancers.
Rivera twerked, twirled, swayed, and flipped her hair before she made her exit leaving the male and female dancers grinding all over each other on the dance floor. Viewers may be familiar with Rivera as the woman in the music video for "Despacito."
Fonsi and Yankee shared a video of their Grammy Awards performance on their official YouTube page and it has since been viewed 699,649 times as of this writing. That is a small feat compared to when "Despacito" first debuted on the streaming platform on Jan. 12, 2017. As of this writing, the music video has nearly 5 billion views on YouTube and 25 million likes.
The remix version of the Latin pop song, featuring Justin Bieber, was nominated for three awards at the 2018 Grammy Awards. "Despacito" got picked for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. Fonsi and Yankee went home empty-handed. They lost all three awards, with Portugal. The Man taking home the trophy for Best Pop Duo Award for his song "Feel It Still."
Unlike at the 2017 Latin Grammys, the "Despacito" remix bagged Best Urban/Fusion performance and the original version won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Short Form Music Video. Fonsi also performed the hit song at the awards with Bomba Estereo, Diplo, and salsa artist Victor Manuelle. The track also sat on the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for the longest time, tying with Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey's "One Sweet Day."
