Spotify's partnership with Echo Nest has resulted in Insights, a blog revealing all sorts of listening data for us music nerds. One recent post looks at what colleges and universities across the United States listen to the most music. Note, of course, that this is based strictly on Spotify data—they can't really track listening numbers via other methodologies. Namely, what universities signed up for the service's student deal at the highest rates. So yes, it's somewhat corporate.

The findings are still interesting however.

Some of the data isn't all that surprising: For example, of course the "hipster" playlists are consumed by New York University students at higher rates. What's more surprising is that NYU attendees openly consider themselves hipsters. Ivy League attendees at Cornell seem to listen the earliest (in the 6 to 7 a.m. slot), suggesting they're up earlier studying or doing projects.

Surprising to us on a more personal level is that Ohio State students consume more classical music than any other school in the country. We (a '11 alum) noted with humor that we were streaming John Adams' opera The Death of Klinghoffer while writing this article so maybe the findings ring true. Our cynical fiancé points out the high number of European and Asian graduate students at the school probably explains the interest in orchestral music. But whatever.
