Green Day stunned British fans on Wednesday night. Tne band unleashed a nice surprise (for the people over the age of 14, at least) and played the album Dookie in its entirety at London's Brixton Academy.
Billie Joe Armstrong announced the decision to play the album like it wasn't no thing. Like he wasn't about to launch into a record that sold 20 million copies and defined a generation of pop-punk.
"So next year, in 2014, it's gonna mark the 20-year anniversary of a record called Dookie," he said at the end of "Wake Me Up When September Ends." "So right now we're going to play the whole record from front to back."

The band can still play the hits from their early days with a surprising amount of ferocity, given that they have been performing them for almost two decades.

this is just the type of spontaneity that this band needs to keep up to string crusty old fans along. Not saying they need to pull out full albums each night, or do the whole nostalgic thing a la Weezer, but here's hoping they keep throwing curve balls like this in the future. At the very least for 2014.
It's nice to see Green Day return to a time when they weren't the bad guys.
