Jake Owen is the cool, beach-country guy with the cool songs and the cool guitars and all that stuff. But you know what is not cool anymore? His hair. The 33-year-old's scalp recently got the respite it sorely needed after years of hauling Owen's wildebeest mane around.

"I don't even know what the back looks like!" he told KMLE after getting a haircut. "I'll tell you what the weirdest thing for me is, is seeing my neck. I've never seen that before, you know?"

At first, Owen blamed the cut on his significant other.

"I don't know, man," Owen said. "My wife, she wanted a different man."

But it did not take him long to reveal the truth.

"It gets long, and my mom's always like, 'You need to cut your hair,'" Owen said. "It wasn't like I was going to trim it, I was going to just drastically do it."

Perhaps the move was also made as part of Owen's recent commitment to be more badass.

"A lot of folks think I'm just the 'Beachin'' guy, I'm the f---ing beach bum," Owen told Rolling Stone this fall.

"I'm not downplaying that. I've made a good living and a good career out of doing songs like 'Barefoot Blue Jean Night.' I take a lot of pride in being a pretty good singer, and songs like 'Barefoot Blue Jean Night' and 'Beachin',' where I'm kind of just talking, don't showcase that. For the first time in my career, I feel like it's imperative for me to put out a song that offers some validity."

So the singer released "What We Ain't Got," a departure toward a more serious sound. Check it out:
