After seven years of hearing very little from Modest Mouse, there has been a flood of new announcements and releases in the last week. After teasing a new single "Lampshades on Fire" and announcing a new album Strangers to Ourselves for March 2015, today (Dec. 15), the lead track finally has arrived online.

"Lampshades on Fire" premiered on Minnesota radio station The Current.

Though it's been over five years since Modest Mouse last released new music with the EP No One's First and You're Next, "Lampshades on Fire" is a comfortable return for both the band and its fans.

The true star of "Lampshades on Fire" is the beat. The hard-hitting drum smashes courtesy of Jeremiah Green blend perfectly with a tambourine and hand claps, giving the song a stomper feel with all the rage and power one would expect from Modest Mouse.

Above the beat, there's something particularly ear-wormy about "Lampshades on Fire." As he is wont to do, Isaac Brock masterfully works his vocals around the beat, giving the song a catchy sensibility.

Quite a bit of time has passed, but in the end, it feels oh-so-right.

"Lampshades on Fire" is the lead single from Modest Mouse's forthcoming new album Strangers to Ourselves. The album, which will be the band's first since 2007's We Were Dead Before This Ship Even Sank, will be released on March 3, 2015.
