John Oliver had a big year with his new HBO show Last Week Tonight. It's currently on hiatus, but that hasn't stopped the hilarious British host from chiming in on some issues via web exclusives. The latest target is New Year's Eve, which Oliver categorizes as the worst holiday. Despite your feelings toward the end of the year, Oliver finds humor in the negative side of the upcoming celebration, Rolling Stone reports.

"New Year's Eve is like the death of a pet. You know it's going to happen, but somehow you're never truly prepared for how truly awful it is," Oliver says in the video below. "New Year's Eve is the worst. It combines three of the least pleasant things known to mankind: Forced interaction with strangers, being drunk, cold and tired and having to stare at Ryan Seacrest for five solid minutes, waiting for him to tell you what the time is."

The former Daily Show correspondent adds that the best thing to do is avoid the entire night. He offers a few excuses to use for specific scenarios. You can tell friends that your cousin, Paul Smecker, is ill and needs your help. If your friends understand the Boondocks Saints reference, Oliver suggests cutting ties with them anyway because of how bad that movie is.

You can also tell people you're doing a cleanse because "there will be no follow-up questions, because nobody wants to hear about your f**king cleanse."

Oliver exited The Daily Show in December of 2013, getting extremely emotional when buddy Jon Stewart said goodbye. Last Week Tonight debuted in April.

"I took his advice on anything. I talked to him about this decision ... As a comedian I'm almost allergic to sincerity, but he's been amazing," Oliver told The Guardian about his mentor, Stewart.

The show will return in 2015.
