An Albama native who now calls Long Island home, Katie Crutchfield (aka Waxahatchee) is prepping her third studio album. The as-of-yet-untitled project will be her first on Merge Records.

"I'm so happy to announce that Waxahatchee will be working with Merge," she said in a statement on the label's website. "They've been one of my favorite labels for a very long time. They're wonderful people, and I'm so excited about making records with them in the future!"

While Crutchfield didn't offer up many other details about the new disc, she gave a few hints to App.com in November.

"I will say it's another step away from what I've done in the past," she said. "That's kind of been, creatively, what's driven me in the past couple of years, just the idea of challenging myself and trying something else out.

"I feel like for a long time, when I was younger and I was writing songs and playing in bands, I got really hung up on a sound and I would just try to write songs that were uniform, and I feel like lately it's been kind of fun to push myself into all kinds of different directions. That's kind of where I'm at, and the next record is not going to be any different."

The former Don Giovanni Records artist usually records alone, but she's also received plenty of help from Great Thunder's Keith Spencer.

"I'm sure that if it was more of a democracy with three or four other people full of ideas, it would be harder to get everybody on board with that," she said.
