It's a big week for Sam Smith. Not only is the British crooner in the running for a mess of Grammys this Sunday, but he's also released an important new single and music video. Today (Feb. 5), Smith released the emotional clip for his new In The Lonely Hour single "Lay Me Down," and he's taking on the Church's stance on gay marriage - an issue near and dear to his heart.

Upon premiering the music video on his Facebook page, Smith accompanied the clip with an emotional message.

"This song holds a very dear place in my heart. With this video myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in. This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country. I hope you enjoy it. I love you all," he wrote.

The music video shares this message. It begins with a gorgeous, expansive shot of a lone Smith standing at a church pulpit, near tears as mourners sit behind him in the pews. Then, the music video shift to a place of celebration. Smith is joined by a loving man. Not changed from all black to all white, Smith married the man of his dreams in the church, surrounded by everyone who loves him.

But, as in real life, it's just a fantasy. Soon, Smith is relegated back to the church, alone.

It's quite the statement piece, and not one he's afraid to make in a stunning new way.
