It's safe to say that One Direction fans are mourning the exit of Zayn Malik in a variety of ways (mostly through Twitter). But the shocking announcement yesterday (March 25) that the founding member has had other consequences: people are listening to way more 1D.

One Direction streams on Spotify rose 769 percent in the United States on Wednesday after Malik announced he was leaving the band, according to The Wrap. The major rise in One Direction plays can be chalked up to one thing: a "spike of sadness."

"One Direction are one of the biggest bands in the world, with over 1.4 billion streams on Spotify," Kevin Brown of Spotify said. "Looking at One Direction's streams in the U.S. on Spotify yesterday, we can clearly see the 'spike of sadness' happening around 5 p.m.-6 p.m. (ET), when their millions of fans paid tribute to Zayn by listening to One Direction's music together all over the world."

The songs that Directioners chose to listen to seem to indicate a certain brand of sadness. The most-listened to song was the Up All Night closing track "Moments," which features a heavy Zayn vocal in the third verse and features lyrics about a hard break up. "If I could only have this life for one more day / If we could only turn back time / You know I'll be / Your life, your voice, your reason to be" has a new meaning now...

Other highly streamed songs "Same Mistakes," "Spaces," "I Wish" and "Gotta Be You."

We sense a theme...
