The heartbreak continues for One Direction fans. Zayn Malik recently edited his Twitter profile, going from "@ZaynMalik1D" to simply "@ZaynMalik." He also took down a link to the group's website on his page. Fans took to the social media site to share their disbelief, even though the performer left the group back in March.

"Is speech an extension to our thoughts or an image that we like to create," the singer's first tweet with his new profile reads.

According to Billboard, the handle change sparked the trending hashtag, "#YouWillAlwaysBeZaynMalik1D." Admirers shared everything from simple messages to custom fan art with the hashtag. Check some of the tweets out below.

The popular boy band let their fans down easy in March, releasing a statement about Malik's departure.

"After five incredible years Zayn Malik has decided to leave One Direction. Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis will continue as a four-piece and look forward to the forthcoming concerts of their world tour and recording their fifth album, due to be released later this year," the group wrote.

In that message, Malik went on to explain that he was leaving the One Direction to relax and be a normal 22-year-old. That explanation didn't do much for fans, though, especially after producer Naughty Boy shared a solo track by Malik.
