The Super Bowl has increasingly become a musical event, from VH1's weeklong concert series throughout New York City, to the big band that is the game's halftime show. Saturday night, appropriately, featured the biggest live sets, as the Foo Fighters and Zac Brown Band played Midtown Manhattan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers prepped for their big game appearance by headlining the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

One big detail from the latter show got drowned out during all the hype noise happening around the football game: the confirmation of a new Red Hot Chili Peppers album in the works. Flea, the bassist and arguable leader of the band, told the crowd at the Barclays Center that it would be the band's last show for a while.

"We're just about to go into a period of hibernation to make a new record...a time of progress," Flea said. "It's really nice to get one more blowout before we do that."

Although it may seem otherwise, the Chili Peppers are far from prolific with new music. The group has released just five LP's since the classic Blood Sex Sugar Magik in 1991. If the group were to release a new album during 2014, the three year gap would actually seem somewhat inconsequential compared to the five year gap between Stadium Arcadium and I'm With You. Chili Pepper fans should be happy knowing the group is heading back to the studio at all, versus Flea doing another Atoms for Peace record, or Chad Smith working with Chickenfoot.

Dave Grohl was being less coy on the other side of New York City however, hinting to the crowd that although the Foo have played few shows in the last year, it does have a new album ready in the wings.

"I wish I could play you our whole new record," Grohl said onstage."But... It's a f----n' surprise."
