The MTV VMAs are known for staging a "surprise" event or two for the sake of ratings and post-show buzz, but that was not the case on Sunday night (Aug. 30) when Nicki Minaj called out host Miley Cyrus. The network has confirmed that the beef between two of music's biggest, most controversial stars is 100 percent real.

After some fans called foul and fakery on MTV on Sunday night, the VMAs show runners came out in a statement saying that Minaj putting down her new Moonman award for Best Hip-Hop Video for "Anaconda" to call out Cyrus and ask her "What's good?" was not planned.

An MTV spokesperson and MTV "reporters backstage and outside the dressing rooms" confirmed that the beef was no stunt. Cyrus and Minaj are really engaged in some "Bad Blood." (Was Taylor Swift passing the feud torch with that joint performance?)

Minaj called out Cyrus at the top of the night as she accepted her VMA. After thanking her fans and, oddly enough, her pastor, she put down the Jeremy Scott designed award and called out Cyrus.

"Now back to this b*tch that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what's good?" Minaj quipped before MTV cut her microphone and the host claimed that the press had manipulated her words.

Leading up the VMAs, Cyrus gave an interview with The New York Times, where she was asked about the feud between Minaj and Swift. Cyrus said that Minaj made the issue of race in the music industry about herself and that she wasn't necessarily a nice person.

"If you want to make it about race, there's a way you could do that," Cyrus said. "But don't make it just about yourself. Say: 'This is the reason why I think it's important to be nominated. There's girls everywhere with this body type'...What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It's not very polite. I think there's a way you speak to people with openness and love."
