2014 is about to get a little geekier. After over four years away from the studio, alt-rockers Weezer have returned to the studio. The band shared footage of themselves recording in the studio yesterday (March 19) on its official YouTube page.

Titled simply as "=w=," a play on Weezer's signature logo, the grainy 20-second clip features Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Brian Bell and Scott Shriner playing on their respective instruments as a pretty grungy, hard rocking tune or two plays in the background. But of course, those poppy sensibilities remain. Fear not, Weezer fans!

No other information has been made available from Weezer via the video, except the ominous "in the studio now" message that appears at the end of the clip.

As Billboard noted, the Weezer "=w=" video follows the band's annual Weezer Cruise last month, wherein the band debuted a new song "Back to the Shack" about the recording process. Lyrically, Cuomo decried that he should get back in the guitar and Pat [Wilson] should return to drums, meaning Weezer may be returning to its old form.

This is likely to be a relief for Weezer's fans, after the band released two rather disappointing albums in the latter half of the 2000s (Raditude, 2009 and Hurley, 2010). And regardless, it's good news. Weezer's last release was Death To False Metal, a rarities compilation album released in November 2010.
