Major Lazer, DJ Snake and  had a hit on their hands the moment "Lean On" was released, but nobody thought that it was going to get as big as it has gotten. It has been championed as a "song of the summer" and topped the Spotify charts almost the entire time since it was released in March. Now those streaming numbers have culminated in one major milestone for the Peace Is The Mission single as the track has surpassed Ed Sheeran's X single "Thinking Out Loud" as the most played song on Spotify ever.

According to Billboard, the total number of streams for "Lean On" comes in a whopping 526 million plays worldwide and counting as the track shows no signs of slowing down. It is still getting sync in major commercials, like a high-profile new Samsung campaign and is part of a lot of sports advertising.

It was unsurprisingly named the song of the summer by Spotify and could hold on to that title for the entire year if the tune continues to put up these types of numbers.

In an interview with Time, Diplo said the track was originally supposed to be for a major pop star like Rihanna or Nicki Minaj, but they both turned it down. It is probably for the best since MØ just sounds right on "Lean On."

526 million plays is a lot, but compared to other services like YouTube, which has over a dozen tracks that have eclipsed the billion mark, there is still a ways to go before someone hits that mark. The race to a billion is under way and we will see if "Lean On" can hold off competitors for the top spot on Spotify.
