Mexican music icon Juan Gabriel needs to take a few more days before continuing his first string of shows in the United States in nearly seven years. The vocalist was hospitalized on Monday morning in Las Vegas after playing a show at the Mandalay Bay. Doctors diagnosed Gabriel with pneumonia after he complained of fever and heavy congestion.

Gabriel, 64, had recently entereed the country to do his first performances here in quite some time. His first two shows, both at the Allstate Center in Chicago, sold out, and then he continued by playing three sold-out gigs at Madison Square Garden in New York, the Toyota Center in Houston, and Mandalay Bay. Unfortunately, his illness has forced the performer to cancel his next three dates: a pair of shows at Los Angeles's Nokia Theatre and a show at the SAP Center in San Jose. CMN Events, the producers for the tour, are scheduled to release replacement dates for the delayed shows next week.

Gabriel has sold more than 100 million albums during his career, earning six Grammy nominations and meriting the ASCAP Songwriter of The Year Award during 1995. The latter award was probably given in light of his monumental victory over BMG for control of his music catalogue. Gabriel had refused to record under the publisher's umbrella for eight years. He stood his ground and eventually gained control of his entire catalogue, a collection of more than 500 songs. His first release under BMG following the new agreement told the whole story to fans: Gracias Por Espar, or "thanks for waiting."
