It’s been awhile since John Legend has released a full body of work, nearly three years to be exact, but he recently shared some exciting news with fans anticipating new music. Last Wednesday (Jan. 13), Legend revealed his plan to release a new album.

He made the big reveal while talking with MTV News at AXE’s Find Your Magic Launch Event in New York City. Legend’s fifth album will reportedly arrive later this year.

“[I’m] just in the studio working on my album, that’s the main focus, and working with some really talented musicians and hopefully we’ll make something beautiful,” Legend said. “I think I’ll be finished in the next couple months and then I’ll probably put it out either summer [or] early fall. It will be this year for sure.”

Legend’s last album, Love in the Future, came out in 2013. The album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and featured “All Of Me,” Legend's first No. 1 single of his career.

During his appearance at the AXE event, Legend also spoke on his involvement with the AXE Collective and lent some advice to aspiring musicians and filmmakers.

“Find your voice, your individuality, what makes your art different from that of others and it’ll come from your story, your background, your interests,” Legend said. “Somehow you have to tell a story that’s unique and interesting.”

Aside from working on his forthcoming album and serving as a mentor to young creatives, Legend has been producing new music for Underground, his 10-episode TV series premiering March 9 on WGN. He will also appear in La La Land, the upcoming musical dramedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, due out in July.
