Bassist Mike Dirnt has done a lot of things as a core member of the punk rock group Green Day – alongside frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and drummer Tré Cool – but now he's venturing off to a new project for just a little while. Reports from Billboard state that Dirnt will produce the upcoming indie flick Crickets.

With a script from Alfredo Botello, a story from both Botello and Jack Umbrella, and producing partners Dirnt and longtime Green Day manager Pat Magnarella, Crickets is the story of two brothers: one of whom is an aspiring stand up comedian dying of cancer and the other a miserable office worker. The terminally hopeful stand up comic asks his brother to perform his material for him onstage in order to see whether or not he ever had any talent, but apparently there's something much bigger behind his question.

Dirnt's wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. He talks about the story, calling it "very real" in terms of the love-hate relationship between the brothers. "I've been – and a lot of people have been – affected by illnesses and it's a very relatable thing," he says.

The screenwriter notes that he's been wanting to write about the topic of death, but something that was "touching but not too sentimental." The 'American Idiot' bassist calls the film a "feel good, feel bad and feel everything movie."

"I'm just kind of tired of junk food movies," he continued.

While he is a producer on the film, the musician states he's going to stick to what he knows best –– the music. Therefore, he'll be helping out with the scoring of the project.
