Walt Disney Studios has marketed over $4 billion in ticket sales from the new Star Wars movies. The studio earned back the amount it paid when it purchased Lucasfilm in 2012.

Disney has earned back the $4.06 billion it paid to purchase Lucasfilm, five years after the acquisition, thanks in large part to the three new Star Wars films. The combined ticket sales for these movies already covered the cost of the acquisition. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story surpassed the $4.06 billion.

Of course, this amount does not even count the fact that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has yet to air in China on Jan 5. Likewise, it does not cover the millions spent on production and marketing. The ticket sales are bound to go up in the coming days to eclipse the amount of the acquisition.

The $4.06 billion also does not count the more lucrative marketing strategy Walt Disney Studios makes out of the Star Wars films. The amount does not include the sales for the Star Wars attractions at its theme parks and movie merchandising.

In December 2015, J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens grossed $2.068 billion globally. Rogue One, a standalone movie from director Gareth Edwards released in December 2016, followed close behind with $1.056 billion ticket sales worldwide. Expectations are high for Rian Johnsons' The Last Jedi to pass the $1 billion mark in the next few days after it hit $934 million globally on Thursday. These include the $464.6 million in domestic ticket sales and $469.6 million internationally.

Analysts pegged Star Wars: The Last Jedi to surpass Beauty and the Beast as the top-grossing movie of 2017 after New Year's weekend. Currently, the live-remake of the fairy tale classic sits on the throne as the top-grossing movie of 2017 with $504 million ticket sales. The film earned $1.264 billion globally.

Currently, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is second at the domestic box office. It opened to $450 million in domestic and international sales during opening weekend. The film debuted to a whopping $220 million in domestic sales. Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains at the top with $248 million sales.

News about Disney surpassing the $4.06 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm came on the heels of the studio's interest to gain rights to major parts of 21st Century Fox. Disney wants to purchase Fox's TV and movie properties for a hefty sum of $52.4 billion.
