Chance the Rapper slammed Heineken for its light beer commercial. He said that the ad featured some racist undertones.

In the commercial, a bartender slides a beer past several dark-skinned people to give it to a fair-skinned woman. At the end of the ad, the tagline read, "Sometimes Lighter Is Better," in reference to the brand's new light beer.

On his Twitter account, the rapper made his thoughts known.

"I think some companies are purposely putting out noticeable racist ads so they can get more views. And that s*** racist/bogus so I guess I shouldn't help by posting about it. The 'sometimes lighter is better' Heineken commercial is terribly racist omg," wrote the rapper.

The "No Problem" singer also said that he thinks companies are releasing controversial ads so that people will tweet about it. Doing this can help the brand because even negative advertising is still advertising.

Heineken Releases Statement

Following Rapper's tweet, Heineken released a statement regarding its commercial. A rep for the brand acknowledged the fact that they missed the mark.

The rep said that the brand developed diverse marketing strategies, such as using a press release distribution service throughout the years to help unite people and not divide them. The rep added that the brand is taking every comment to heart.

Later in the day, the "Cocoa Butter Kisses" singer said that he would not boycott Heineken. However, he felt the need to make his thoughts known because it is hard not to react after seeing the commercial.

Dove's Ad Controversy

This is not the first time that a brand seemingly released a racist commercial. Last year, Dove also received criticism for showing a black woman removing her shirt and turning into a white person. The brand released a statement immediately after the release of the ad.

In the statement, a rep apologized for missing the mark in representing women of color. The brand also regretted the offense that the commercial caused.
