The Weeknd releases his new album My Dear Melancholy and fans have not wasted time dissecting it.
To recall, since he released his chart-topping first album Star Boy in 2006, the 28-year-old singer has dated a few famous personalities. He was with supermodel Bella Hadid for more than a year from May 2015 to November 2016. Meanwhile, he started dating Selena Gomez in January of 2017 and broke up nine months later.
In the tradition of confessional albums, The Weeknd discusses his previous romances in My Dear Melancholy. Fans immediately made the connection between the song "Call Out My Name" and his most recent ex, Gomez.
Falling For Someone Emotionally Unavailable
"Call Out My Name" is the first track on the EP, which was released on Friday, March 30. In it, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (real name of The Weeknd), sings about a woman he fell in love with, but who was clearly not over her ex.
"We found each other/ I helped you out of a broken place/ You gave me comfort/ But falling for you was a mistake," he croons.
However, the most telling part of the song was the reference to Gomez's kidney transplant. While Francia Raisa, saved her best friend's life, it sounds like The Weeknd was also willing to give her his kidney.
"I said I didn't feel nothing baby, but I lied/ I almost cut a piece of myself for your life," he sings. "Guess I was just another pit stop/ Till you made up your mind/ You just wasted my time."
Shortly after their breakup, Gomez reunited with her old flame Justin Bieber. The two have been an on-and-off relationship since they were teenagers. They reportedly broke up again this month and immediately, Bieber allegedly moved on to model Baskin Champion.
Fans also assume that the song "Privilege" might also be about the "Fetish," singer which was about her recent struggles and how he stood by her to help her through all of it.
"Enjoyed your privileged life/ 'Cause I'm not gonna hold you through the night/ We said our last goodbyes/ So let's just try to end it with a smile," the song goes. "And I don't want to hear that you are suffering/ You are suffering no more/ 'Cause I held you down when you were suffering/ You were suffering."
The other songs like "Try Me" and "I Was Never There" might also be referencing Abel's heartbreak after Gomez left him for Bieber. Meanwhile, fans are convinced that "Wasted Times" is a song dedicated to his other famous ex, Hadid.
"Hurt You" is about the singer refusing to fall in love with these women again.
