'Lucid Dreams' Song Analysis and Meaning

Even after he died of an accidental overdose in 2019, Juice Wrld continues to strike a chord among hip hop fans who fondly remember him for the highly controversial track 'Lucid Dreams.'

The lyrics of the song portrayed a heartbroken narrator after a failed relationship. Sources said that the song sprung from true-to-life events and the relationship problems that the hip-hop artist was experiencing that time with his lover. The track results from a 'therapy session' when the hitmaker vents out his feelings when he and his girlfriend experienced severe problems in their relationship.

Juice WRLD draws comparisons between having a lucid dream and the sadness he felt in his failed relationship.

"I still see your shadows in my room

Can't take back the love that I gave you

It's to the point where I love and I hate you

And I cannot change you, so I must replace you, oh

Easier said than done

I thought you were the one

Listenin' to my heart instead of my head

You found another one

But I am the better one"

On its debut, 'Lucid Dreams' made it to the 74th spot on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its highest rank was on the 2nd spot of the same chart. Its fame did not stop there, and it also made its way to the Hot 100 top 10 Singles. The track also earned its Number 10th spot at the UK Singles Chart. It also got famous on Spotify, with over a billion streams on the music streaming platform by 2020.

Copyright issues

'Lucid Dreams' became controversial and faced copyright issues months following its release. American record producer Nick Mira alleged that the single illegally copied parts of Sting's 1993, 'Shape of My Heart.' The pop-punk band Yellowcard also issued a $15 million-lawsuit to Juice Wrld for copying the melody of their track, 'Holly Wood Died.' Even after the rapper's death, Yellowcard's law firm King & Fallow is determined to pursue the case.
