With the release of his upcoming album, Standing in the Breach, quickly approaching its Oct. 7 release date, fans of singer-songwriter Jackson Browne are undoubtedly growing eager to hear what the "These Days" singer has been working on. Luckily, he's just given them a taste in a new recording of the song "The Birds of St. Marks."

News of the track comes from Mojo. The tune was originally recorded back in 1970 as a demo, but didn't surface until the singer's 2005 album, Solo Acoustic Vol 1, in live format, of course. This is the first time it has been heard in an up-to-date studio quality format.

"The Birds of St. Marks" is rumored to have been originated by the musician's relationship with Nico, whose debut album Chelsea Girl included three songs scribed by Brown, including "These Days."

"Birds" holds the songwriter's time-honored band, which includes Val McCallum on guitar, Mauricio Lewak on drums, Jeff Young on keys and Bob Glaub on bass. Also joining them is Greg Leisz on the steel guitar. Jackson told Mojo, "This is my ideal band. The interplay between Val McCallum and Greg Leisz on this album – the effortlessness of their chemistry is a gift really.

Standing in the Breach is available now for pre-order on both Amazon and iTunes. The musician is currently on tour in a solo state as of right now; however, he will be joined by a band in the United States on Sept. 14 and in the United Kingdom on Nov. 17.
