Singer-songwriter Carlene Carter attends the Annenberg Space for Photography Opening Celebration for 'Country, Portraits of an American Sound' at the Annenberg Space for Photography on May 22, 2014 in Century City, California.
Carlene Carter is the daughter of Carl Smith and June Carter Cash, the step-daughter of Johnny Cash and the granddaughter of Maybelle Carter, so to say that she was born into country music royalty would be an accurate statement. Her first album, a self-titled project recorded with the Brit-rockers, The Rumour, released in 1978. It surprised many because it blended country with rock and punk. Rolling Stone even said that there was "hardly a trace of what most would take as her 'roots.'"

Over the next 30 years, 9 albums and one best of collection came from Carlene's camp, with the last release gracing the store shelves in 2008. This past April, Carter truly went back to her roots with the release of Carter Girl. The majority of the 12 tracks are songs she went into the family vault to retrieve and while they are all old, they are not dated at all. She told the Chicago Sun-Times that picking out which 12 songs she would record was a fun but long task. "It was quite a feat. It took me years to narrow it down to these twelve ones that made it to the record. I had tons of lists. Because they are so timeless. They still relate in a very positive way to what’s going on in the world."

Fans can hear Carlene performing the new music at 26 shows over the next three months.
