yMusic Release Andrew Norman's “Music In Circles” off 'Balance Problems' (New Amsterdam Records)
yMusic have released an excerpt of “Music In Circles” off of forthcoming sophomore effort, Balance Problems, due out September 30 on New Amsterdam Records. The Andrew Norman composition "Music In Circles" is a cornucopia of striking violins, territorial harmonies and a bass line that carries in the sound of seasonal change.
At about two minutes in, the chamber orchestra composition plateaus to a cascade of percussion, strings and horns projecting wide sun salutations to a celestial percussion god. The horns carry the melody through the rest of the teaser track, quieting the strings and their incessant cries.
Balance Problems features also compositions by Classicalite faves Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly and Timo Andres, as well as well as works by NOW Ensemble guitarist Mark Dancigers, Chicago timbralist Marcos Balter, and Jeremy Turner.
Produced by Son Lux, the follow-up to 2011's Beautiful Mechanical promises to, yet again, straddle that finest of lines between classical chamber music and the classic pop hook. (In fact, check out what string trio Time for Three had to say about Rob Moose, yMusic's de facto leader, on that very subject over at our Clite A.V. Club.)
