Let's be real here, the media often calls attention to the wrong aspect of a story and this week it's none other than Miley Cyrus advocating for a change. Last year her musical talent was back-burnered in favor of her twerking skills and lack of clothing, and then even when she tried to get it right we all still kind of missed the point. Youth homelessness is a huge problem in today's society and Miley Cyrus has morphed into an advocate for the more than 1.6 million teens currently out on the streets.

When Miley showed up onstage at the 2014 VMAs a few weeks ago she brought with her Jesse Helt who accepted her award on behalf of homeless youth, it was initially thought to be a gimmick on her part. Then the media latched onto Jesse's criminal history and talked about his past rather than focusing on the issue at hand. Miley herself has pointed out how wrong the media got it and has continued her Prizeo campaign to raise money for organizations like My Friend's Place that work to get kids off the streets and into a safe environment.

Coming off of last years' scandalous VMA performance one thing was clear — Miley Cyrus is true to herself. Who she is changes in the moment, so anything is possible with her. It's nice to see her emerge as a real social advocate just a few months after being half written off as a twerking hot mess. Apparently right now that personal truth means that Miley will continue to raise awareness and money for homeless youth who are there either by choice or by life circumstances.

Are you guys surprised to see Miley continue to educate her 49 million fans on youth homelessness? Did you think that she was pulling another fast one on us at the VMAs? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
