Sometimes in music, the idea of a twin sister musical act may seem a bit like a gimmick - two young New Yorkers trying to maneuver their way through the world of pop and folk armed with an arsenal of ukuleles and cymbals on their shoes may feel like a novelty. But, that could not be further from the truth, because duo Nalani & Sarina are here and demanding to be taken seriously.

With a history of classical music training, a wide spectrum of old school influences and a passion that goes for miles, Nalani & Sarina channel their sisterly energy into their music, and their chemistry oozes from the screen and into your ears.

"The core of it is the two of us and having everything revolve around each song. We try to bring every song to the realness of the two of us and then expand from there," said Sarina in an interview with Music Times.

Though young, bubbly and stunningly pretty at 21 years old, Nalani & Sarina are musical souls, working with Will Lee best known from The Letterman Band and other music veterans for their latest album Lessons Learned and pulling from influences that are just a little bit before their time.

"We're huge fans of '60s soul music. We're big fans of Otis Redding, Ray Charles, anything that has a bunch of soul in it... we wanted it to sound like a bunch of people in one big room having a jam," they said.

And that jive, jam and soul comes through on the stunning Lessons Learned, with beautiful piano melodies and guitar tunes such as "In The Eye" leading into some harder hitting tracks like "Get Away." Lessons Learned is an eclectic collection of music that somehow still manages to be cohesive in the end through the talents of Nalani, Sarina and their backing band.

Nalani & Sarina are careful not to get big heads or fall into the shark tank as new, emerging artists. They recognize making it is all about getting your back into it.

"Our dad would always say, 'The harder you work, the luckier you get,' and we try to live by that. In any career or any industry you get into, you have to work for it. You can't expect it to just fall into your lap. So, just work as hard as you can and you'll get there," said Nalani.

"Just for artists in general, whatever you want to say, say it. Whatever expresses yourself and needs to be said for your experiences, say it and go out and do it," added Sarina.
