Brandon Flowers on The Killers: Band Suffers from a 'Lack of Drive,' Next Album Will Be 'Different'
Brandon Flowers of The Killers knows why his band is not more successful. In a recent chat with "NME," he said The Killers suffer from a "lack of drive." That is some harsh criticism considering they have two platinum albums under their belt with "Hot Fuzz" and "Sam's Town," as well as strong releases with "Day & Age" and "Battle Born." Flowers cites U2 as a band who was more in tune with their time and generation. "There's definitely a drive that we're lacking," Flowers said. "It takes a lot of work and that's fine, everybody's different, everybody's gonna have their own road that they go down. Other than Coldplay I'm not sure anybody's made the dent that U2 were able to make. They were so much a part of the landscape and the timing of when they were coming out." That is a tough comparison. U2's first album came out in 1980 during an era that relied heavily on albums. "Hot Fuzz" was released in 2004 in the midst of a still-changing landscape. -
The Killers, Jimmy Kimmel Discuss Viral Christmas Hit 'Joel the Lump of Coal'
The Killers have been doing Christmas songs for nine years, but none of them have captivated the nation quite like "Joel the Lump of Coal," their newly released Christmas anthem co-written by Jimmy Kimmel. Apparently, the late-night host is longtime pals with Killers singer Brandon Flowers, and two recently sat down with "Entertainment Weekly" to discuss their new hit. "I don't know if Brandon even knew this, but I wrote a lot of Christmas songs when I worked at KROQ, the radio station here in Los Angeles," Kimmel said. "So I was very excited when Brandon called and asked if I wanted to be involved in directing the video for it. I said I'd really like to help write the song, and then we talked about what we would do, and we wanted to write something that was kind of like 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,' and we just happened upon a lump of coal named Joel." The song is a lengthy tale about — you guessed it — a lump of coal named Joel who lives at the North Pole with Santa Claus. The little piece of anthracite becomes horrified when he realizes he is going to a naughty kid's house, but everything turns out OK in the end. -
The Killers, Jimmy Kimmel Bring "Joel, The Lump of Coal" to Life in New Christmas Single [WATCH]
There are a lot of Christmas characters and tropes that have gotten their own carole: Santa, snowmen, reindeer, snowflakes, candy, wishes, kisses, love... but one popular part of the Kris Kringle tale has been left out of the equation... until last night (Dec. 1), that is. For the ninth year in a row, rock band The Killers released its annual Christmas single on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, and finally gave that fateful lump of coal a theme song. Enter in, "Joel, The Lump of Coal." -
