  • Shazam Reveals Hit Prediction Data: Is Omi's 'Cheerleader' Next?

Predicting what songs will be a hit can be an inexact science. Sometimes some songs seemingly come out of nowhere to become summer hits like Nico & Vinz "Am I Wrong" or the Robin Schulz remix of Mr. Probz "Waves." Staying ahead of trends and knowing which artists are set to break through, while also paying attention to those already established hit-makers is key, but with music becoming more data driven, we are able to predict with more accuracy the probability of the next big song. One of the main predictors in the music industry is Shazam, since a user Shazaming a song is a strong sign of interest in that one track. Cait O'Riordan, VP of product, Music and Platforms at Shazam spoke at the Strata Hadoop World 2015 Conference in London to discuss how the platform predicts a song's success and showed that the next one might Omi's single "Cheerleader."
  • Grammys 2015 Best Dance Recording, Who Should Win & Who Will Win: Disclosure, Clean Bandit, ZHU Battle It Out

The Grammys have never been known to get hip-hop right, but when it comes to electronic music, they have arguable been even worse. The category of Best Dance Recording was just created in 1998, even though the genre was invented in the United States in the late 1970s, early 1980s. Pop artists like Cher, Jent Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears have dominated the category over producer, DJs like Moby, Fatboy Slim, Justice, Daft Punk and Bassment Jaxx who have been snubbed by songs like Baha Men "Who Let The Dogs Out." 2015 hold promise as the Grammy committee decided to make up their past transgressions and shocked the world with a surprising and deserving batch of nominees.

  • Clean Bandit Releases 'Stronger' from Special Edition of 'New Eyes' [REVIEW]

Clean Bandit took over the radio waves in 2014 with their January single "Rather Be" featuring Jess Glyne. The song soared to the top of the U.K. charts — a first for the band — cracked the "Billboard" Top 10 and helped land them on festival stages worldwide while propelling the release of their artist album "New Eyes." Now they have unveiled a new track, "Stronger," from the special edition re-release of the album, which will also include a reworking of Robin S's classic "Show Me Love." While the album was not as well-received as their singles work, "Stronger" shows the same ability to create inescapably catchy singles that Clean Bandit have become known for. "Stronger" starts off with similar organ chords that were found in "Rather Be" but soon switches to a more traditional house piano that carries the melody of the song. Balancing their classical background with the deep grooves needed for a house song, they inject a measure of musicality into the track with sweeping violin strings over a shuffling bass line and deep synth stabs.
  • Sinead O'Connor Backs 'Do They Know It's Christmas?," Tells Critics to 'Shut the F--k Up'

Last week, on Nov. 17, the latest version of Band Aid's classic charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was released online to raise money for the Ebola crisis in West Africa, and though it went straight to the top of the U.K. charts and is supporting an undoubtedly good cause, the song has been the subject of plenty of criticism, particularly for its lyrics. According to two British newspapers, Emeli Sandé, who actually appears on the latest version, said the lyrics need "changing," while Lily Allen called the song "a bit smug" and said she would prefer "donating actual money." One artist who is vigorously defending the song, however, is the famously outspoken Sinead O'Connor, who also appears on the song. "I think everyone should shut the f--k up," O'Connor told "Broadsheet," via "Billboard." "If you didn't like the lyrics you shouldn't have agreed to sing the song. I think it's smug of Lily Allen to say it's smug."
