Miley Cyrus' Bangerz follow-up is in the recording stages, and of course the "Wrecking Ball" singer is collaborating with one of her new best friends. Over the weekend, Cyrus teamed up with her "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" collaborator and friend Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips to record new music, and it sounds like nothing we've ever heard from her before.

In a series of Instagram posts from Cyrus and Coyne, a new song from Cyrus takes shape, and it's more psychedelic Flaming Lips style than the family-friendly pop of Cyrus' past or even her shocking 2013 album Bangerz.

"Why do people only show forgiveness / When they wanna sound cool in a song," Cyrus sings with pain in her voice, as wavy, trippy music floats underneath her.

In a separate post from Coyne, a more polished and produced version of what sounds to be the same track can be heard. Cyrus' voice is distorted, in what sounds like a series of tubes, and she's just barely above the instrumentation in the mix. It's the same sort of trippy music you'd expect from The Flaming Lips, not one of pop's biggest stars.

Coyne also shared a photograph of himself, Cyrus and his girlfriend Katy Weaver in the recording studio.

What exact project this song is for remains tightly under wraps, but it's safe to say that soon we'll be hearing a whole new Miley.
