It's no secret, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt likes to dabble in a few extracurricular activities here and there (nudge nudge, wink wink). If you still haven't caught on, Gordon-Levitt is a frequent smoker of marijuana (also known as weed) just like his good pal and fellow marijuana enthusiast, Seth Rogen. In a recent candid interview with Playboy, The Night Before star spoke openly about his drug use, how marijuana boosts his creativity levels and his trippy experience dropping acid.

The 34-year-old new dad, who welcomed his first son with wife Tasha McCauley this August, may not be allowed to smoke on set, but when he does smoke, his creative juices can't help but start flowing. Gordon-Levitt insists the drug opens his brain up to new ideas, sometimes extremely eccentric ideas that he wouldn't normally put together if he was sober. Brainstorming is at an all-time high (no pun intended) whenever he lights up.

While the side effects of marijuana are still up for debate, many believe the illegal drug causes a decrease in motor skills and kills your brain cells. Luckily, the young actor has so far had predominantly positive experiences whenever he smokes.

"When I smoke weed I'm more liable to make connections I wouldn't otherwise make," Gordon-Levitt said to Playboy. "Sometimes those connections are ludicrous. But sometimes they're great. You're like, 'Oh sh*t, I might not have thought of that,' and it actually makes sense in the morning."

Despite using the drug often for recreational purposes, Godon-Levitt admits he never really cared about the scientific classifications of marijuana strains he smokes. He also doesn't appreciate the negative connotations linked with weed, believing the media "demonizes" it without really having any firsthand experience using it. Not only has the drug become legal in some states due to its ability to improve the medical state of people suffering with certain illnesses, but it's also reportedly less harmful than most drugs. Gordon-Levitt explains why it's his drug of choice.

"I don't pay attention to the strains that much, but I know they say sativa is more up and indica is more down. I don't like the sleepy ones. I never get that, so I always buy sativa. Even though the tide is turning, I think marijuana is overly demonized in our culture. I do know people who let it get out of control and let it play a part in their lives that's not beneficial. There's definitely an addictive quality, but it's psychological. It's not physically addictive in the way cigarettes or alcohol are physically addictive."

The 500 Days of Summer star also made a shocking confession about another drug he's experimented with that gave him a similar feeling on an extremely higher scale. Dipping into hard drugs increased his physical and mental vision in a way that he's never experienced before.

"Well, acid's a lot more intense. I consider both psychedelic and kind of the same thing. Your mind will make connections that you wouldn't otherwise make. I remember having a vivid Birdseye view of where I was. Somehow, my vision went up above me, and not only could I see.... It wasn't so much about myself. It was seeing a totality of how everything is all part of one thing, connected."
