Stephon Marbury has already left his mark on the sport of basketball and now he's being honored for his achievements with a museum in China.
The former Boston Celtics player, who now plays for the Chinese Basketball Association with the Beijing Ducks, shared the big news on Twitter. The 300-square foot building, appropriately named “The House Of Marbury Museum,” will house his jerseys, trophies and other memorabilia.
The museum dedicated to the former NBA star will be open to the public on Monday, Dec. 28.
As noted by ESPN, Marbury has led the Beijing Ducks to three of the past four Chinese Basketball Association championships. In addition, he was named last season’s finals MVP for the first time. He spoke highly of time in China and the importance of his jersey.
"My Beijing jersey means more to me than any of them,” Marbury said, according to china.org.cn. “I don't [say] that because of the championship, but just because I'm here at home and I've had a support system.”
He began playing overseas in 2010 after a stint with the Celtics in 2009. Throughout the span of his career, Marbury has played for various NBA teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, New Jersey Nets, Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks.
“All those places that I’ve played at is a preparation for me to come to Beijing. For me, my Beijing jersey will be the jersey that I will retire here in China.”
In the past, Marbury has been honored with a statue, which stands outside of the Ducks' arena. The statue was created three years ago and a postage stamp featuring his likeness was released in April. Following his retirement, Marbury said that he hopes to coach the national team someday.
