Krewella is back! The electronic duo consisting of Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf has teamed up with Circus Records mainstay DISKORD on "Beggars," their first new single in awhile. The heavy track and its accompanying video find the sisters are absolutely still "Killing It" following the departure of former bandmate, Kris "Rain Man" Trindl. The follow-up to 2015's "Somewhere To Run," "Beggars" is apparently the result of three years of songwriting, We Got This Covered reports. Krewella started working on it in Los Angeles, and it eventually made its way to DISKORD's studio in the UK.
The new track adopts the group's tried and true formula of fusing hard-hitting dubstep with elements of rock. "Beggars," however, is much more hardcore-leaning than previous poppier efforts. DISKORD provides most of the production, but Krewella demonstrates killer vocal abilities.
The "Beggars" video documents the Yousaf sisters throwing down at a warehouse party where everyone in attendance got the memo regarding the all-black dress code. Amidst all the headbanging, the moshpit occasionally clears and reveals the venue's political graffiti: "Feel the Bern" is scrawled behind the stage; "F*ck Trump" is also on the wall, visible at around 40 seconds in.
The video also features a shrouded ghost figure looming just outside the party, an image that Jahan explains the significance of on her Tumblr page, Rolling Stone points out. The ghost, who Jahan also refers to as the Grim Reaper and whose shroud also resembles a Burka, is based on a photograph of Yasmine taken by Jack McKain in a back alley in Los Angeles' Chinatown.
In Jahan's words: "Haunted by the fear of some people interpreting the figure as offensive and threatening, I am far more possessed by its aura of universality. What I love about this piece of art, besides my sister, is that it transcends race, ethnicity, religion, age, and time. It can be whatever you want it to be."
It remains unclear if the new song and video are part of a bigger forthcoming release, but the outfit does hint at more new music coming soon in a Facebook post: "Krew, thank you for waiting over a year to hear new music. We can't even recall how many times we've said music is "coming soon", but we are so happy to say that soon is now HERE, and there is so much more to come. We hope this song brings you strength, power, and sweat in the times you need it most."
