Yesterday evening, enigmatic spaz-hip-hop group Death Grips unexpectedly shared a new song online. The track, "More Than the Fairy," features Les Claypool of Primus on bass. The new tune follows the trio's recently released fifth studio album, Bottomless Pit, which just dropped on May 6. Listen to the new song below!

Death Grips, the inscrutable and exasperating electropunk threesome of frontman MC Ride (a.k.a. Stefan Burnett), percussion wizard Zach Hill (formerly of Sacramento math-rock gods Hella) and keyboardist Andy Morin, have had perhaps the strangest and most tempestuous music career of any fellow indie press darlings.

Not only did this month's release of Bottomless Pit come after the band's well-publicized declaration that they were breaking up, Death Grips may be the first band in music history seemingly dropped from a major label for steadfastly refusing to alter a phallus-featuring album cover.

Outside collaborators are also few and far between in the singular world of Death Grips, which makes this Les Claypool-featuring track all the more startling. As the band explained in a rare interview with Clash, they do not hold high esteem for very many fellow performers:

"There are a few bands I like and respect very much here but I do not follow the local music scene. Like many things, for the most the part, I think it sucks... played out, lazy, lacks feeling... No one sounds like us. Death Grips is the pulse of the individual and that exists only within itself."

Les Claypool, however, appears to relish collaboration. Speaking to Magnet earlier this year about his new musical partnership with Sean Lennon, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, the bassist shared his exuberance in finding fortuitous artistic cohorts:

"[It's] so unusual in music in general, I find, but I feel very lucky to have these very close and beloved collaborators to be able to do that. But I feel in terms of songwriting, that's very unusual and very special."

And now, without further ado, "More Than the Fairy":
