Creating a great publicity photo is a difficult art. Some artists are more photogenic than others, but a truly great photographer will strive to understand what makes an artist unique and capture a moment during performance, rehearsal or repose that illustrates what that artist is all about.

Making a photo stand out from the sea of mundane, safe images risks making the artist look ridiculous if the concept doesn't work. And after looking at so many pub shots here at Classicalite, we realize that sometimes there isn't that much separating the best photos from the worst. All it takes is for one element to be off, and a potentially great photo bites the dust.

 Here, then, are the top five publicity shots to have crossed our desks in 2014:

This photo of violinist Anne Akiko Meyers represents a relatively daring concept: photograph a world-class violinist in the woods, seated on a fallen tree branch, with light streaming through the trees behind her. But this photo by Molina Visuals really does look magical and otherworldly.

Complex photo shoots like this are balanced by other photos in which simplicity reigns. Photographer Lisa-Marie Mazzucco proves time and time again that less really is more.

Her penetratingly blue eyes are the focus of this mesmerizing photo.
