Finally, a EDM-event cancelled for something other than organizers and local law enforcement being worried that fans wouldn't be able to attend in a healthy manner. Tiësto opted to call off his April show in Caracas, the capitol of Venezuela, due to the current political upheaval in the state. He promised to reschedule the gig, which was planned for April 4 at Metropolitan University, as soon as possible, noting that his previous shows in the South American country have always been fun. His statement on the cancellation was brief and to the point.
"It's no time to party," he said.
Long looming dissatisfaction from Venezuelan citizens were pushed into active protests after the murder of former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear. High levels of crime was only one of the problems bothering citizens, as raging inflation rates and inability to buy basic goods have also raised the tensions. Polls show that more than half the populace holds President Nicolás Maduro responsible. The government has responded with crackdowns on protests, resulting in deaths, and foreign media has been strong-armed by law enforcement.
It could be a while before Tiësto will be able to make up that show.
Unfortunately, more activity that gives a black eye to EDM shows has gone on this weekend as well. The Ultra Music Festival in Miami is one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the country, but it was marred Friday night when a crowd of individuals without tickets crashed through a border fence and trampled a security guard, resulting in a reported broken leg and brain hemorrhage.
