Tony Lanez has made his name in hip-hop as an extremely prolific and influential ghostwriter. The artist claims to have originated the current sound that is so pervasive in todays R&B milieu. It's apparent, after listening to Lanez, that the artist is heavily influenced by the Soul and R&B material from the 60s and early 70s (a style which has resurfaced largely as of late). Now, with songs like "Say It" (No.37 on the Hot 100), it's clear that Lanez's rise to fame is on its way. The young artist says such a rise will obliterate all the competition, claiming when he's on top "it's over for everybody"

According to HipHopDX, Lanez is the youngest of six, and lost his mother at a young game. This adversity has shaped his artistry, and prompted the artist to try to stand out with an entirely unique persona, suffering various obsacles and hardships along the way.

Speaking of this childhood tragedy, Lanez said, "When I was coming up, I depended on my mom. Then when she died when i was 11, the whole youngest thing kinda left me. I had to start making older kid decisions."

The rapper also had something to say about the Drake/Meek Mill beef.

He told HipHopDX, "Honestly to me personally, I look at it and just say they're both talented artists. They're both incredible. I wouldn't really give it to anybody. They both gonna still be who they are. I'd be wrong if I say this person won or that person won."

Speaking of his role in the popularization and creation of the new sound of todays R&B material, Lanez said, "I fathered this whole wave. There's a certain sound. There's a certain grid and a certain realness that I've seen. There are certain things that I'll say... I always keep it blunt, whether or not it's in the music or out of the music."
