'Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders' Case Was Originally Tagged Trial of the Century

Before the trial of O.J. Simpson was dubbed as the trial of the century, it was the Menendez brothers murder case that first made the headlines worldwide. Now, Dick Wolf’s new anthology series titled “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” will dramatize the case. It will be an eight-part series and will be the first installment of the latest “Law & Order” franchise from Wolf and director Lesli Linka Glatter.

“Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” will focus on the case of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty, at their Beverly Hills home in 1989. There was one trial but separate juries for each brother. After a mistrial and deadlocked juries, they were re-tried and convicted on two counts of first-degree murder in 1996. The brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without parole reports TV Guide.

The limited series features a cast which ranges from big name and TV veterans such as Edie Falco, Heather Graham, Anthony Edwards and Josh Charles, to relative unknowns like Gus Halper and Miles Gaston Villanueva, who play the Menendez brothers according to Deadline.

As it is, Wolf already has a list of cases he wants to feature in his new series saying that it is something unique for him after doing “Law & Order” for 27 years. “This is taken from the headlines; we‘ve made some great shows ripped from the headlines, but this is on a different level,” Wolf added.

Other cases on Wolf’s wish list include that of the Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, “Night Stalker” serial killer Richard Ramirez and “Son of Sam” killer David Berkowitz. For the meantime, he has “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” that will premiere on September 26, Tuesday, on NBC.
