Modeling isn't an easy career to break into. It takes hard work and dedication, and while models come in all shapes and sizes, there are some time-honored tips and techniques that can make or break a career. While challenging a successful modeling career is well worth the effort. Breakout model Tom Jazz shares five pro tips to help aspiring models build flourishing careers.

T​om Jazz, born Thomas Phillip Jasniewski, currently lives and works in Seattle, Washington. A natural talent and well-known face at just 19 years old, Tom knows what it takes to get into the industry. "Modeling is a unique career path with many things to consider," states Tom, "but there are things the pros do that amateurs don't. It's crucial to set yourself apart." 

1​. Find the right agency.

"​It can be tempting, but don't rush into signing with anyone," says Tom. "Take your time to find an agency that has your best interests in mind." Finding an agency that is a good fit is all about research. They are your biggest ally. Choose wisely. 

2​. Always be professional.

"​Being professional sets you apart from the beginning," states Tom. "Make sure you show up on time, are accountable, responsible, and can take direction." Tom maintains that a professional demeanor is key. Tom explains, "Modeling moves fast. People need to trust that you will get the job done."

3​. Build a portfolio.

Y​our portfolio is your resume. It is your introduction. Tom believes that a great portfolio exceeds looks every time. "Take time to build a portfolio that showcases you best," explains Tom. "Keep it updated and ensure it is polished."

4​. Always practice and refine your craft.

"​Whether it is your walk, voice, or pose, constantly work on fine-tuning your craft," says Tom. "This elevates your personality and performance as a model." Tom understands that the industry can be cutthroat and only the best book the jobs.

5​. Be yourself.

"​Authenticity will always help you stand out," explains Tom. "I believe that when we are authentic, we are showing our individuality and best selves." By staying true to what makes you different, it is easy to stand out in a sea of aspiring models competing for the same job. 

Tom chose to model because he wanted to be satisfied with his life and what he was getting out of it. "I took it very seriously from day one," he claims. "Reading up on and embracing what the pros of the industry did was the catalyst to my career." Tom believes that anyone can go from breakout to breakthrough in their careers with these five tips in mind.
