Like the music industry, the Grammy Awards are ever-changing. The Recording Academy is adapting to the changes and keeping up with the music industry's trends and culture.

After introducing three new categories at the 2024 Grammy Awards, The Recording Academy has amended its current nomination rules and guidelines. (via Variety)

Updated 2024 Grammy Awards Nominations Rules

General Field

In the past two years, the Grammy Awards has included ten nominees in the Big 4 categories-Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year.

Since 2022, two more nominees have been considered for the general categories. It was explained back then that the move was driven to "cast a wider net, to make room for more artists and genres from music's expansive and diverse landscape, and to embrace the spirit of inclusion."

However, it was reported earlier that it would revert back to eight again, and with tighter Album of the Year eligibility rules.

Album of the Year (AI, Eligibility)

In anticipation of the rise of artificial intelligence, the Grammy Awards ensured that no song containing AI would be submitted for consideration and win.

"Only human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration for, nominated for, or win a GRAMMY Award. A work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any Categories," the rule says.

Aside from this, Album of the Year nominees should have their credited artists, featured artists, songwriters, producers, engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers included in the 20% of the album's playing time.

Songwriter of the Year, Producer of the Year Non-Classical

Since the former's introduction last year, the two categories will now be included in the live shows. Each category will have five nominees.

Best Improvised Jazz Solo

The said category will now be renamed and redefined to Best Jazz Performance.

Best Regional Mexican Music Album (Including Tejano)

The said category will be renamed and redefined to Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano).

Best Music Film

In the new amendments, the previous requirement that 51% of the film must be performance-based was removed.

"This Category includes music-focused and individual music videos that together create a visual album (if videos are packaged and entered together as one cohesive film). While dramatic feature films and biopics are not eligible, films with fictional elements are eligible," the amendment says.
