    The Newport Folk Festival has released the first half of its lineup—borrowing from the trend in EDM of releasing lists of performers in "phases"—announcing that Courtney Barnett, Sturgill Simpson and Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis will be among the performers. Granted, none of the performers named thus far will serve as headliners, but the list should tide over those waiting for information on the long-running Rhode Island music festival.

    Laura Marling is at the end of her transformation from wunderkind to veteran. The English folk singer recorded her successful 2008 debut "Alas, I Cannot Swim" at 15 and is now set to release her fifth album "Short Movie." The 24-year-old has always had an edge to her style, but she has never wandered far from her brand of acoustic folk. Speaking with "Rolling Stone" recently, Marling revealed that "Short Movie" will be a departure from her previous material. She said Hurricane Sandy was a big influence on her new sound.

    Beck announced today that he is releasing an official studio version of his 2012 sheet music collection Song Reader. As reported by Stereogum, the album will feature a different artist performing each of its 20 songs, with Beck performing just one himself. Contributors to Song Reader, which will be released on July 29th through Capitol Records, include Jack White, Jeff Tweedy, Norah Jones, Fun., and Jack Black.
