Beanie Sigel is apparently in critical condition after being shot in the back Friday, Dec. 5. Initial reports did not indicate the severity of the wound, but the 40-year-old rapper is currently sedated and unable to speak with investigators, according to NBC Philadelphia.

As previously reported, Sigel was shot outside his Jersey Shore home Friday morning after dropping his kids off at school. His attorney believes Sigel was not the intended target in the shooting, which has not resulted in any arrests.

Sigel was just released from prison in August after two years behind bars for tax evasion. He reportedly owed $728,000 in back taxes, and his probation for that incident ended Saturday.

In a separate incident, the rapper was arrested in 2012 after police pulled him and a friend over and found codeine syrup, prescription pills and a loaded handgun in the vehicle, per a previous report. Both men were felons and therefore not allowed to possess a loaded firearm. Police also found $4,500 that Sigel claimed he won.

Sigel used to rub shoulders with Jay-Z and recorded two Top-5 records for Roc-a-Fella — 2000's The Truth and 2001's The Reason — before following up with a Billboard No. 3 record, 2005's The B. Coming, for Dame Dash and Def Jam.

The magic was gone after that, though, with a disappointing chart performance for 2007's The Solution — No. 37 — and then two LPs that barely made a dent on the national music scene: 2009's The Broad Street Bully and 2012's This Time.

Casual rap fans will remember him best from the singles "Anything (featuring Jay-Z)" and "Beanie (Mack Bitch)." He has not hit the Top 100 on the rap singles chart since 2003, when he made a guest appearance on Peedi Crakk's "One for Peedi Crakk."
