As a Christmas gift to their fans, Canadian indie rock band Metric have shared an unfinished version of a new song titled "The Fatal Gift," which you can check out below. Though the band is known for their synthy new wave sound, "The Fatal Gift" is a low-key piano ballad with minimal instrumentation, though they may fill out the arrangement later on, seeing as how this is unfinished.

"It doesn't really sound at all like anything else we're doing and stands alone," lead singer Emily Haines wrote in a message to accompany the song. "The question is, did I accidentally write a dark Christmas carol last summer? Looks like we're about to find out."

In the message to fans posted with the song, Emily Haines confirms that Metric is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to their 2012 album Synthetica. "Last year at this time, we were staggering home from our last leg of touring Synthetica, and we were beyond ready for our hard won year off," Haines writes, "And yet here I am, writing this letter to you from the studio, fully immersed in fresh music and somewhat amazed that we've managed to keep on loving what we do for this long."

Synthetica was released in June 2012, and was Metric's fifth studio album overall. Four singles were released from the album: "Youth Without Youth," "Breathing Underwater," Synthetica," and "Lost Kitten."

"Every record we've made has had its purpose," Haines told Gimme Noise, "and we've pulled something creatively from them as a band. You always hope that you're doing good work, and luckily Synthetica totally surpassed our expectations in the way it was received, so it's all good."
