The Grammy Awards has been awarding talented artists in the field of music over the past few decades and although many fans believe that the current categories are enough, there is yet to explore and some singers weigh in on the topic.

According to Billboard, the Recording Academy announced earlier this year that they will be adding five new categories for next year's show, which will be on February 5, 2023.

The new addition will shine a light on video game soundtrack composers, songwriters, and many more. The said categories are Songwriter Of The Year (Non-Classical), Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performance, Best Score For Video Games And Other Interactive Media, and Best Spoken Poetry Album.

In a statement to the outlet, CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said that the reason why they added new categories is for them to make sure the award-giving body is "representing music and that's ultimately our goal."

Artists Wants to Add More Categories In The Future

The outlet spoke to several artists from different genres to suggest what categories they would like to see in the future and they came up with interesting ones.

Rising star Omar Apollo, who is set to open for SZA's upcoming "S.O.S." tour, said he would love to see an "engineer of the year award" because they are crucial when it comes to the musical process of creating an album and should get the attention similar to producers and writers.

He then expressed his gratitude to his engineer, Nathan Philips, who worked on his record, "Ivory."

Taylor Bennett, a rapper, said he wanted the recording academy to add "hip-hop" into their categories. He clarified that "hip-hop/rap" can be considered "close cousins" but there is a "great distinction" between the two genres.

Priscilla Block has a completely different take as she wanted to have the best new artist award in different genres, explaining that it would mean the entire world for an artist to get recognized by the Grammys.

"There is so much new talent in every genre, so I think it would add a lot to the Grammys to recognize each one's best new artist," she added.

Other artists like Gryffin wanted to recognize electronic/dance producers, Wet Leg said "Best lo-fi recording," Lolo Zouaï said bilingual album category, while Kim Petras wanted to add "the biggest slay."
