It debuted at the top of the charts in 1997 and has since gone on to become one of the best-selling singles of all time. However, at a time when the world is actually blessed with a Barbie live action movie, "Barbie Girl," the popular song by Aqua, is drawing flak from those who believe the song's "problematic" lyrics are harmful to young girls.

Aqua's 'Barbie Girl' Dangerous?

While some voiced their disapproval, others remained ardent fans.

Some said the lyrics are worrying as they are quite lewd. Barbie is probably singing to Ken in this instance, but kids who would draw attention if they were overheard chanting "undress me everywhere."

Other lyrics are as problematic, especially "Dress me up, make it tight, I'm your dolly. Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky."

"Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please. I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees," may be catchy, but it's also cringe-y.  Not the lyrics parents would want their young children singing!

I'm a Barbie Girl is such a troublesome tune, wrote one listener on Twitter in response to criticism of the song's lyrics.

Some commenters target the song for shaming girls who do not like a Barbie, too.

Another person commented, "Barbie Girl is problematic, but there are WAY worse things out there."

"I really hate when people [sing] the song Barbie Girl when teaching children as if it's not wildly problematic," a third person chimed in.

Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice 'Barbie World' Takes the Cake!

Fans wrote: "There is a reason I was spiritually reenergized by Aqua's Barbie Girl, I do not make the rules," one enthusiastic admirer wrote.

Others said the modern Barbie song is a better jam. Compared to how 'dangerous" Aqua's 'Barbie Girl' is, 'Barbie World' is quite empowering.

Fans claimed that the Nicki and Ice Spice song Barbie World will undoubtedly be on their list of top songs this year.

As fans prepare for the theatrical release on July 21, competing against Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, it's uncertain when the whole reviews will be released. One of the first people to comment on the movie on social media was Variety's social media editor Katcy Stephan, who called it "perfection." Barbie is flawless. In a whimsical, delightful, and belly-laugh-inducingly humorous romp, Greta Gerwig provides a subtle meditation on what it means to be a woman,' Stephan says. "
