MIAMI - Fresh off a year of blockbuster projects like "Superman" and "The Last of Us," Peruvian-American star Isabela Merced has teamed up with Grammy Tony Succar for her first single of 2025, a remix of her 2020 track titled "apocalipsis."
During a media tour in Miami to promote the song, which marks her awaited return to music, Merced sat down with The Latin Times for an interview about the remix and her upcoming projects and her future as Hawkgirl in the DC Universe.
Written and recorded by Merced with "some dears [sic] friends", she described the song as "special" and revealed that it is the first song she made with her brother Gyovanni Moner. "apocalipsis" was released on May 22, 2020, at the start of the pandemic, as the first track of her EP "the better half of me."
Since then, she decided to team up with Succar to produce a salsa version of the track, honoring their Peruvian roots.
Succar, who describes himself as a "salsero from birth," first came into contact with Merced through WhatsApp (which, as any Latinx person knows, is the only acceptable mode of text communication). He fell in love with the "apocalipsis" and put Merced's vocals over a salsa melody of his own making. Merced describes hearing the track for the first time as "incredible" and "It felt right. It felt like he sent me the completed version of the song. So I didn't have to do much."
The future of Hawkgirl
Merced is set to return as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl in season 2 of the HBO Max series "Peacemaker," starring John Cena as the title character. Hawkgirl first made her debut in 2025's "Superman," and fans have been clamoring for information regarding her future. However, Merced remained tight-lipped about what to expect from her role in the series, stating, "I can't really say much. But I would say you can expect to get to know the character more...I wouldn't expect too much, though."
The Peruvian-American star is also producing a film for the first time. Starring Merced and "A Quiet Place" star Noah Jupe, "Psyche" will follow "a young backpacker drawn into the murky world of illegal archeological digs where he unwittingly unearths treasure beyond his wildest dreams." Merced added, "I'm shooting something in Malta. I'm producing it and acting in it, and it's a psychological thriller. It's an independent film, and it's just like my taste. It's the first time. I was actually able to get funding for a movie to happen.
You can watch the music video for the "apocalipsis" remix here and catch season 2 of Peacemaker on HBO Max on August 21.
