Caleb Shomo, the 33-year-old frontman of metal band Beartooth, publicly announced he is gay, a revelation that sources say coincided with the end of his 13-year marriage to actress Fleur Shomo.
Shomo disclosed on social media that he is a proudly gay man after years of privately struggling with his sexuality, addiction and self-loathing. The announcement followed reports that the couple, married in Kauai in 2013 after roughly two years of dating, have separated.
A person close to the former couple told Radar Online that the decision had been building for a long time for Caleb, and that Fleur Shomo has been left incredibly heartbroken. The source said both parties have emphasized mutual respect and continued support during what they described as an intensely personal period of change.
Caleb feels a huge weight off his back, and finally feels like he can breathe. He stands by his decision and is ready to face the likely backlash, especially among parts of the heavy metal community, which is filled with macho fans the source said.
Per AOL, another insider described the public admission as an act of courage given the culture surrounding segments of the metal scene.
"Coming out publicly after years of internal struggle takes enormous bravery," the person said. "Caleb knew there would be scrutiny, questions and criticism, but he reached a point where he could no longer hide who he was."
Fleur Shomo addressed the split in an emotional Instagram post accompanied by footage of the couple dancing and laughing together. In the post she wrote that she wanted nothing more than for her partner to just be ok, but acknowledged her own confusion and anger, writing that she asks herself constantly if she is a bad person for wondering "wtf this means for my world."
"You can love and support your person through the hardest time in their life, whilst also be completely demolished and lose yourself at the same time," Fleur Shomo wrote.
"Nobody will know anything about our marriage like we do," Fleur said and described the relationship as "wonderful and full of so much fun, adventure, and love." "I already miss it and my husband more than anything," she added.
Fans had begun to speculate about trouble in the marriage earlier this year when Fleur did not post a customary anniversary tribute in April — a tribute she had posted every year since the couple wed.
Representatives for Shomo and Fleur Shomo did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The singer's announcement has drawn an outpouring of support online, while sources said both he and his estranged wife are trying to navigate the emotional fallout as he begins living more openly.
