Organizers of the Freedom 250 celebration say music will play a central role in the Great American State Fair, a 16-day national exposition planned for the National Mall this summer as part of the nation's 250th anniversary observance, though questions remain about the final makeup of the entertainment lineup.

The fair, scheduled for June 25 through July 10, 2026, is expected to combine performances by nationally known pop, country and hip-hop artists with appearances by military musical ensembles and ceremonial units. According to Freedom 250, the nonprofit organization helping coordinate anniversary events alongside federal partners, the fair is intended to bring together representatives from all 50 states, five inhabited U.S. territories and the District of Columbia in a World Fair-style celebration of American history, culture and innovation.

Music programming has emerged as one of the event's most visible components. In an announcement released May 27, Freedom 250 unveiled an initial roster of performers that included Martina McBride, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, Young MC, The Commodores, Morris Day and The Time, Flo Rida and Bret Michaels. Organizers said additional performers, speakers and participants would be announced in the weeks leading up to the fair.

The organization's plans call for headline performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the exposition. Among the events originally announced were an "I Love the '90s" showcase on June 26, performances by The Commodores and Morris Day and The Time on June 27, a concert by Flo Rida on July 2 and a performance by Bret Michaels on July 3.

However, preparations for the musical lineup have become more complicated since the initial announcement. Several artists named in the first wave of performers have publicly withdrawn from the event. News reports published this week said Martina McBride, Young MC, The Commodores, Morris Day and The Time and Bret Michaels were among those who announced they would no longer participate. Several artists cited concerns about political associations surrounding the event.

A statement released by Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner to media outlets emphasized the organization is "welcoming all."

"Freedom 250 is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) dedicated to uniting Americans around the nation's 250th anniversary. Freedom 250 is focused on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans - welcoming all who share our goal of commemorating this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America," she said.

As a result, organizers continue to face the task of rebuilding and expanding portions of the entertainment schedule ahead of the fair's opening. Some performers, including Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida, remain associated with the announced lineup, according to event materials and public statements. Freedom 250 has also indicated that more entertainment announcements are forthcoming.

While popular music performances have drawn much of the public attention, military bands and ceremonial ensembles are expected to provide a significant portion of the fair's musical programming.

Freedom 250 has announced appearances by a wide range of military musical organizations, including the U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, the U.S. Army Fife and Drum Corps, the Airmen of Note jazz ensemble, the Air Force Singing Sergeants, Army Downrange Rock and other service-affiliated performance groups. Ceremonial units such as the Commanders-in-Chief's Guard, military drill teams and color guards are also scheduled to participate.

The military component aligns with several themed days planned during the exposition. Military and Veterans Appreciation Day is scheduled for June 28 and is intended to honor active-duty service members, veterans and military families. Throughout the event, military ensembles are expected to provide performances that range from Revolutionary War-era music and ceremonial pageantry to contemporary rock, country, jazz and popular music.

According to Freedom 250, the musical programming is designed to complement broader exhibits and attractions spread across the National Mall. Organizers have announced plans for state and territorial showcases, innovation exhibits, robotics demonstrations, educational programming, film screenings and family-oriented attractions, including a 110-foot Ferris wheel and the refurbished Smithsonian National Carousel. Admission to the fair is expected to be free.

The Great American State Fair represents one of the largest public-facing projects associated with the nation's semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The anniversary year has prompted planning efforts across the country, with federal, state and local organizations developing commemorative programs intended to highlight American history, culture and civic life. Freedom 250 describes itself as a nonpartisan organization working with government partners and private organizations to coordinate national observances connected to the anniversary.

Historically, milestone national celebrations have relied heavily on music to shape public participation and collective memory. From military bands performing patriotic standards to contemporary artists drawing large audiences, musical programming has often served as a bridge between official commemorations and public entertainment. The Great American State Fair's planners appear to be pursuing a similar approach by pairing military ensembles with artists whose careers span country, rock, hip-hop, dance and pop music.

Organizers have not yet released a complete entertainment schedule covering all 16 days of the exposition, and additional performers are expected to be announced.
