Detroit producer, DJ and saxophone player Grant Kwlensinski, known professionally as GRiZ has surprised fans with a brand new 9-track mixtape Chasing the Golden House Part 1 packed with unreleased music. The full project is being released for free via BitTorrent as a thank you to his fans who sold out his Red Rocks show this weekend on Friday, Sept. 4.
GriZ has been releasing several of these tracks as loose free downloads over the past few months, including his track with Muzzy Bearr "Summer '97" and now he has packaged them all together in a special mixtape. The tape traces his roots with early Dilla-influenced hip-hop to the jazz-influenced, progressive funk that he is known for. That is all mixed together into an interesting electronic undercurrent.
The fact that this is Part 1 would suggest that there is more music to come at some point. GRiZ dropped this mixtape as a surprise, so we may never know when the next one will come, but it is good to know that there is more material potentially on the way from the saxophone-wielding funk master. The concept of "chasing the golden hour" is soemthing that he has been seeking for several years now.
This is the first full-length project from GRiZ since his April album Say It Loud, which shows a remarkable rate of production to put out this much quality music in one year.
