With Jack White sitting behind the drum kit, The Dead Weather roared into a special performance of "I Love You (Every Million Miles)" to open Stephen Colbert's second week as host of The Late Show.

White, Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence haven't performed live in five years since the release of 2010's Sea Of Cowards, but Colbert's program opened up an opportunity the band couldn't refuse as they look to promote the new album Dodge And Burn out September 25.

For all the hype, the performance really seemed to get off to a slow start. With just guitar and drums in that opening section the sound seemed thin and weak compared to the recording. Thankfully, the bass and vocals kicked in soon to fill out the empty space. By the time the half-time beat kicks in and White is belting backup vocals behind Mosshart's screams, all is corrected and the band sounds like itself again.

The visuals also played into the overall performance with a switching color filter that turned everything grey and purple to match the LP's album artwork. Mosshart benefited the most from this as her hair turned a vicious mix of white, black and purple adding to the ferocity of her head banging.

No word yet on a Dead Weather tour, so these TV and Internet appearances might be the only glimpse into the band we get.

White's appearance on the show comes days after a quarrel in New York City between him and Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, who claims White picked a fight with him at a bar and bullied him. White later denied that he antagonized Carney, although he admitted they encountered one another on that night. Whether these guys are working solo or with side projects it seems the feuds will continue.
